I didn’t immediately love this song, it was a grower. Once it did grow though, I was smitten. Also, I really love when I can bookend these years with a female artist. I want Riley to have positive female role models.
I absolutely love Bat For Lashes, I impatiently waited for her new album, The Haunted Man, to leak for weeks. I know, I’m a terrible music lover… what can I say. It was well worth the wait though, fantastic. In September I played Marilyn so much that I started to annoy Terrence, I’m guessing he was not a fan. He would say things like, didn’t you listen to this already? Yes, yes I did… and if you weren’t here I’d listen to it on repeat, but I don’t out of respect for your sanity.
Bat For Lashes, Marilyn
At minute 2:54, that’s when this song gets super adorable. I die.

Since Riley was born, back in October of 2009, I’ve been selecting a song for each month. When she turns 16 I plan on giving her a USB key with 192 months worth of soundtrack to her life on it. I plan to keep the key in a music box in my home, she gets to play with this music box all she likes and dance around to her music. Then after she turns 16 she can take it home. That’s the age I’ve decided that she’ll be able to fully understand what I’ve been keeping for her and respect it. This was her 3rd year, I hope she likes it.
Sadly knowing my brother, her year probably sounded more like this…
October | Moves Like Jagger / Someone Like You
November | We Found Love
December | We Found Love
January | We Found Love / Sexy and I Know It
February | Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
March | Part of Me
April | We Are Young
May | Somebody That I Used to Know
June | Somebody That I Used to Know / Call Me Maybe
July | Call Me Maybe
August | Call Me Maybe
September | We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
…and that year isn’t nearly as good as the one I’ve assembled for her listening pleasure. When we hang out I try to stay away from the radio and all of its top 40 same fest. Songs like We Found Love and Call Me Maybe are a plague, they never stop… never.
Anyway. See you next month for a whole new year!
