Battleview Orchards

Its been a while since I crossed something off the dusty ol’ life list, and to be fair… it still is. I actually went apple picking for the first time two years ago with my very pregnant friend Stephanie, my mom and my goddaughter Riley… but we had camera issues and all the photos came out white. On principal I haven’t crossed off apple picking from my list because I couldn’t show my work. Now I feel better about doing so.

Amanda insisted that she, Christina and I have a ladies day in the apple orchard, so this passed weekend we took a brief road trip to New Jersey and picked us some apples. It was Chris’ first time and mine and Panda’s second. Chris and Panda were obsessed with the idea of scoring some golden delicious, despite the only ones being at the tip top of the trees. They may or may not have broken a few branches to get what they wanted. I on the other hand was in my glory with all the rome apples. Yum. I brought home twice as many apples as the girls… but I was picking for two. Panda was much more interested in acquiring some pumpkins and sadly paraded back and forth through the mostly barren pumpkin patch hunting down the perfect specimen. Chris and I just stood in the dusty field watching her frantically searching, we made up for it by hitting up all sorts of pumpkin stands back home. We scored some very cute pumpkins… and I got a sugar pumpkin so I can make pie again soon.

Battleview Orchards was an awesome place. I hope to go once more before the season is over, the apples were gorgeous and tasty. The pumpkin situation was less than ideal… but its ok, they had a bunch of pumpkins over at the shop across the street. The shop is open all year round and sells all the crops from the farm as well as some AMAZING cider. If you’re very patient you can also wait in line for some of their apple cider donuts, fresh and warm from the fryer. Even if I don’t get to go apple picking again this season, I will definitely be stopping by the store to grab some cider and donuts… so good.

Warby Parker Fridays, Holt.

Yes, I’m still here. I’ve had a crazy couple of weeks, that I will eventually (hopefully) find time to write about. My nieces sweet 16 was two Fridays ago and I had to get pretty and party hard. Last week we were running around preparing for my bridal shower, and then hosting and recovering from it. I learned why most brides have nothing to do with shower planning, who needs that added run around. This wedding stuff is becoming more and more stressful… and scary. But, back to business– HOLT!

I got the Holt frames as my second attempt at wearing blue frames down the aisle, I enjoyed the fade from navy to a light blue.

Holt in Blue Slate Fade

So… what do ya think?

I liked me some Holt, but they just weren’t right for the aisle. Slightly too large for my face, or so everyone kept telling me. Feel free to disagree. The Holt’s were my last pair in my try-on box, but don’t you worry… I have one or more (maybe) surprises in store from Warby Parker.

Warby Parker Fridays, Pierce.

Today I’m going to the eye doctor to renew my prescription. I’m not a huge fan of eye doctors, they creep me out. I’ve always been uncomfortable with ophthalmologists and dentists in general, I don’t like strangers being that close to my face. Once I get this over with I can order some glasses online and be merry. It’s all worth it in the end.

So… what do ya think?

I liked these glasses, although I don’t think they work for my face. They’re very angular, which I love, but I think I need a softer edged frame. Warby Parker is very hit or miss for me, I find that I love a frame so much I forget about my face. Whenever I go to any other eyewear shop I’m very specific with which frames I know will suit my face. Something about WP makes me wanna be wild and try them all. Its an addiction.

Warby Parker Fridays, O’Brien Style

This week I thought we’d take a break from my tired old face to bring you my handsome husband-to-be, Terrence, modeling his very first try-ons. Terrence has always been a bigger fan of metal, so when Warby Parker introduced metal frames to the usual line up, he began to come around. He even got a couple of plastic frames in his set of 5.

The last time Terrence* updated his frames was 2006, we got our glasses at Selima Optique. Since then I’ve since gotten 2 more from them and 1 from WP. I love to buy new glasses, but Terrence is a little less eager to change something that he feels is working. Even though he’s shopping around now, he still intends to update his old Mykita’s with new lenses. Maybe my frames addiction will wear off on him.

Terrence in his Mykita frames, its love.

I was a big fan of the Crane, I also liked the Greeley. Terrence was into the Edison and the Crane only, he really didn’t like the other three. After asking his sister and a few friends for their opinions it seemed pretty unanimous for the Crane’s. Terrence still prefers the Edison’s but he trusts us. He plans on buying them after he visits the eye doctor in a few weeks. I’m pretty excited. I’d never seen him in plastic frames (aside from when I put my glasses on him and tell him he’s pretty), I think they look nice on him. Hopefully he’ll eventually agree with us.

*Terrence was super sleepy when we did our photo shoot, he also hates having his picture taken… so forgive him his droopy/irritated expression. He tried.

Warby Parker Fridays, Pt. 3

Happy Summer, y’all! Ok, now that the sun is in full effect I REALLY need to get some sunglasses. I only tested one pair during my last try-on, I have to check out a few more to make my final decision. It’s hard being blind in the summer months, prescription sunglasses are crazy expensive. Thank goodness for companies like Bonlook and Warby Parker. Its like this whole new world to me, I no longer have to wear a pair of non-prescriptions over my regular glasses or spend over $200. Well… once I find a suitable pair that is.

So… what do ya think?

Again, I love the color… I’m a huge Rum Cherry fan. I thought the frames were slightly large for my face, but I kind of liked them. I still wanna try a few more. I’m really into the new Ocean Avenue Collection, but they don’t send those home. I have to make my way to the new Warby Parker store on Lafayette St. soon before they’re all gone. I’ve been dying to have an excuse to go anyway.

A lot of low cost yet fashionable online glasses shops are popping up all over, its nice, but what makes Warby Parker the best (to me) are the home try-ons. Who wants to invest in a pair of glasses that you can’t test out first? I know most of these online shops have the virtual try-on option, but I can’t deal with it, I find it so useless. Plus, this is so much fun.

Warby Parker Fridays, Pt. 2

Remember when I said I wanted blue frames for the wedding… here are the first ones. The color made me sooo happy. I was instantly wide awake and having fun the moment I put them on. The Roosevelt’s were by far my favorite to play with… I think it shows.

Roosevelt in Bondi Blue

So… what do ya think?

I love the color, but I don’t think they work on me. They’re a touch too big and I’ve decided that the style of nose piece, keyhole, doesn’t work for my face. From now on I’ll try to avoid it, although most of my favorite pairs have it. I find that all the best colored frames either have that keyhole, they’re round or have the eyes on cheek thing… this is how I describe the ones that I’ve decided don’t suit my face. One day I’ll find out the proper terms for them.

It’s been two years since I last updated my sight, so the hunt for new frames shall continue. I also desperately need sunglasses, I’m getting old and squinting makes for crows feet. I’ve started getting headaches when I drive in the strong sun and those visors are no help. So I have two hunts, wedding frames and driving frames. Wish me luck.

Warby Parker Fridays, Pt. 1

Its been a few years since I’ve had fun with some Warby’s. So long in fact that some of my past favorites aren’t even available anymore… sad (in case you missed those, check out try-ons one and two here). I took hundreds of photos this time around, so instead of having one post I thought I’d drag it out. From now on, or until I run out of styles, Friday will be Fun with Warby Parker Day.

The objective of this set of home try-ons was to find a suitable pair of new specs to get married in. Originally I only had blue frames in this set, but I realized that some of the frames wouldn’t suit my face and I took them out. I’m actually still not even sure about any of the frames from this box and I’ll probably end up doing it again. I really do want a blue pair for the wedding, or at least something new and fun. Plus, its time for new glasses anyway. Here it goes you guys, our first pair, our first Friday…

Sloan in Rum Cherry

So… what do ya think?

I know these photos are a little stiff, It’s been so long since I did self portraits… especially close ups, I loosen up and start to have fun with it after these frames. Maybe the deep red made me serious… I dunno.

See you next week!

Who, What, Wear: Everything Is Food

If you haven’t already guessed it by the site of the snow on the ground, this post is a bit late. Not as late as you think… it was actually warm this day, despite the frost. Amanda and I did a few photo shoots since our last style post here, most of them you won’t be seeing… we’re still getting the hang of this. She’s getting used to being in front of the camera and I’m getting used to directing someone to be photographed.

This is one of my favorite of Amanda’s dresses, its perfectly yummy. When she first got it she was a little lost on what to pair with it, but as you can see she’s getting a lot more confident at putting together her outfits. I remember when I met Amanda, back in 2006, she had just graduated high school and always matched from head to toe. If she had on a pink top, her socks were pink… if her top was striped with 4 colors, she had a bangle and earrings to represent each color… she was hilarious. Amanda always looked great, she was just afraid to mix it up.

She’s still a stickler for matching perfectly, she’s just learning how to create teams of colors that go together, rather than all the same colors. This is an important thing for a girl as colorful as Amanda.

Who, What, Wear: Little Houses

Amanda is one of the most fashionable people I know, since I’ve been throwing all my cash towards my wedding rather than clothes, she’s going to be helping to bring back the style posts here.

Amanda is one of my closest friends (she’s also my maid of honor), I talk to her everyday. Our communication often flows towards outfits and shopping. We exchange countless text messages and emails filled with pics of which to wear with what, or links of should I buy or isn’t this cute. Recently Panda asked my advice on how to wear heels. She’s always been more of a ballet flat or ugg boots gal. She’s previously made the classic error that a lot of girls make when buying heels, too tall. This is especially bad for women that don’t usually wear heels. I can’t tell you how often I go to parties where the ladies are running around in slippers or with bare feet. Its because of this infatuation with super tall heels instead of cute comfortable heels. My advice to her was to look for a heel between 2-3 inches. Tons of cute shoes come in this heel height and they’re comfortable enough to walk around in all day.

Amanda is my youngest gal pal, just having turned 24, she wants to start exploring a more ladylike sense of style. She would also like to keep her childlike sense of self. This outfit is all about exploring both sides.

Get used to this face, she’s gonna be helping out a lot while we plan the wedding. She’ll probably also stick around after that. Maybe I’ll even let her write one of her own posts so she can explain her thought process while shopping.

Who, What, Wear: Luck of the Irish

Its been a while since I felt like doing an outfit post shoot, something about Summer. Summer makes me uncomfortable in clothes, I can’t wear cardigans, shoes or tights… it takes all the fun out of getting dressed for me. I’ve never been a fan of open toe shoes or sandals so I don’t really own any. That will definitely have to change next year, these last two months have been torture, I can’t be bothered to put any type of shoe on. I think that as I get older my feet get hotter and die if I enclose them.

I actually took these photos in the middle of Spring, but was too distracted to do anything with them… and then I forgot.

I feel like I’ve been neglecting a lot of things lately, what with all the frantic planning of the wedding, our big Summer vacation, me quitting my job (I’ll talk about that another time), trying to rush all of my projects so I can work from home (we’ll put a pin in that too) and of course my latest rush to the finish of our engagement party plans. My sleep schedule is demolished.

Was I supposed to be talking about clothes? Oh yeah. Only a few weeks left until Autumn, the best time for getting dressed. Hopefully my business plan will work out and I can afford to make myself pretty by then. Fingers crossed.
